A painting by Raphael testifies the use of a lens by the Supreme Pontiff.
Portrait of Pope Leo X (Giovanni de' Medici) with the cardinals Giulio de' Medici and Luigi de' Rossi. Painted by Raffaello Sanzio. Dated 1518 and kept in the Uffizi Gallery. Dimensions 155.2 x 118.9 cm. Now the work is undergoing restoration until 2020. A noteworthy copy can be admired from the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. Made by Andrea Del Sarto.
